The way it works with outlets like Quillette and The Free Press is you publish a load and a half of articles that appeal to "classical liberals" as they bash anything to the left of Barack "Dronebone" Obama, thus cementing a readership base of the kind of people that populated Tea Party protests and stood on the other side of that bridge in Selma.
Then when you throw an absolutely meatless bone to the people who question your "free speech, free thought" self-identification, you can be sure that your readership will tear it apart in the comments, thus ensuring its failure to penetrate the "brains" of your ever-expanding fans.
Claire got mauled by her own dogs when she defended Australia's extremely authoritarian reaction to COVID and has been on the back foot ever since trying to get a more "center of center" readership to replace what was lost in the Angry White Dudes of The Right category of "classical liberals".
"Claire is the kind of person who refused to bow to her audience even though they were metaphorically mauling her like dogs, therefore she must be a sell-out now to make up for it" is not a convincing argument.
FP readership is pretty diverse. I am *very* far from your characterizations, and the comments section is always filled with those accusing them of either being too right wing or too left wing. Which to me indicates they do a good job of being centrist.
I've been a FP reader since their founding. But I didn't characterize their readers in any way (other than suggesting some may be keen to apply these heuristics). I characterized their journalists as nearly all being pro-free speech & pro-Israel—which I am as well—which isn't inherently about being left or right-wing.
Edit to add: Just realized you might be responding to Michael above, who certainly offered a colorful characterization of FP and Quillette readers!
lol... doesn't make them "centrists"... there's a whole history out there for anyone wishing to see it... ethnic cleansing has only recently been imported into "Western Values" ...
Speaking of body snatchers (and mind and soul too) this essay is very much about such

Lovely, smart piece with a startling and funny surprise ending. Thank you.
We need some similarly thoughtful writing now about the "rule of law" and "human rights", not all they're cracked up to be.
Thank you 🥰

Definining support for the Zionist slaughter-pigs currently ethnically cleansing the Gazans as "centrist"?
Go away.
Lol it's my comment section. Zionists are welcome here.
